| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to |
| 3 | | congratulate Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1337 of Mount |
| 4 | | Prospect on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, For 100 years, VFW Post 1337 has been advocating |
| 6 | | for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces in personal and |
| 7 | | political matters, providing camaraderie for returning |
| 8 | | military personnel and their families while serving as a |
| 9 | | community organization through its volunteer work; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The VFW Post 1337 clubhouse, built by locally |
| 11 | | skilled tradesmen and craftsmen who were veterans of World |
| 12 | | Wars I and II in the post-war years of 1949 and 1950, was |
| 13 | | created as a location for veterans to share their |
| 14 | | service-related connections and memories, to commemorate the |
| 15 | | past, and to have a place of belonging; and |
| 16 | | WHEREAS, VFW Post 1337 has been presented with the status |
| 17 | | of All-American Post, a prestigious recognition given by the |
| 18 | | national VFW organization for member participation in VFW |
| 19 | | programs and for growth in membership numbers, for six years |
| 20 | | in a row; and |
| 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1899, the VFW of the United States was founded |

| 1 | | by veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine |
| 2 | | Insurrection as a loose association of many smaller local |
| 3 | | veterans' organizations in order to secure rights and benefits |
| 4 | | for their service, as many of these veterans arrived home sick |
| 5 | | or wounded without long-term medical care options or a |
| 6 | | veterans' pension to sustain themselves; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, National and local VFW chapters have been |
| 8 | | instrumental in advocating for veterans and service members' |
| 9 | | rights on the county, state, and national levels, such as the |
| 10 | | creation of the G.I. Bills in the 20th and 21st centuries, |
| 11 | | expanding educational benefits for service members, increasing |
| 12 | | healthcare accessibility for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent |
| 13 | | Orange and Gulf War veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome, |
| 14 | | and championing for the inclusion and recognition of female |
| 15 | | veterans; and |
| 16 | | WHEREAS, National and local VFW posts have been |
| 17 | | responsible for securing the funding towards the creation of |
| 18 | | the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans |
| 19 | | Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and the Military Women's |
| 20 | | Memorial to recognize the warriors of the past, preserving |
| 21 | | their stories and sacrifices for the benefit of future |
| 22 | | generations; therefore, be it |
| 23 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL |
