SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Fred Palin of Cuba, who passed away on
4January 13, 2025; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Fred Palin was born to Frederick T. Palin and
6Laura Tenant Palin in Cuba on February 6, 1933; after
7graduating from Cuba schools, he attended Northwestern
8University and Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma;
9following his service in the U.S. Army, he attended Michigan
10State University; he married Ruth Ann McDonald on August 14,
111953, and she preceded him in death in 2011; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Fred Palin worked with his father to reorganize
13the Day & Palin grocery stores in Fulton and Mason Counties in
14the mid-1950s; after purchasing the business from his father,
15he operated grocery stores in Cuba, Lewistown, Havana, and
16Farmington for over 40 years; after selling the grocery
17stores, he created a general merchandise and eBay store that
18continues to operate; his passion for retailing was his way of
19making a creative contribution to the community; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Fred Palin was actively involved in the
21Independent Grocers Association (IGA), the Cuba Christian
22Church, and the Fulton County Community Concert Association

1over the years; he also loved big band and classical music; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Fred Palin is survived by his children, Philip
3Jon (Jeannie) and Jana Lea; three grandchildren; his nieces,
4Amy Sabol and Mary Nelmes; and his niece-in-law, Jan (the late
5James Joseph) Nelmes; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Fred Palin and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
9friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Fred Palin as an expression of our
12deepest sympathy.
