SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Ramon Reyes Venegas, who passed away
4on September 13, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ramon Reyes Venegas was born in Ocotlan, Jalisco,
6Mexico on January 15, 1948; he migrated to the United States in
7the 1969; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Ramon Reyes Venegas was a beloved community
9restaurateur known for serving birria, a traditional Mexican
10dish his family has cooked and sold for over 100 years; he
11opened his first restaurant, Birrieria Ocotlan, on South
12Commercial Avenue in Chicago in 1973, and he later opened a
13second location on East 106th Street in 1992; more recently,
14his signature fare was honored as one of the best 26 dishes at
15restaurants across the U.S. by the New York Times in 2024; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ramon Reyes Venegas loved learning, traveling,
17and making and sharing his family's traditional birria recipe;
18and
 
19    WHEREAS, Ramon Reyes Venegas was a great businessman, a
20loving and devoted husband and father, and a cherished and
21loved grandfather; he never met a stranger, and he was a firm

1believer in doing good for others without expecting anything
2in return; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Ramon Reyes Venegas is survived by his wife,
4Herlinda Reyes; his children, Teresa, Veronica, Ivoni, and
5Andres; and three grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Ramon Reyes Venegas and extend our sincere condolences to his
9family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Ramon Reyes Venegas as an
13expression of our deepest sympathy.
