| 2 | | WHEREAS, January is Radon Action Month, and it is |
| 3 | | imperative for all Illinois citizens and property owners to |
| 4 | | test their homes, schools, apartments, healthcare facilities, |
| 5 | | and other occupied buildings for radon; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas |
| 7 | | that may threaten the health of Illinois citizens and their |
| 8 | | families; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer |
| 10 | | in the U.S., and it is the leading cause of lung cancer in |
| 11 | | non-smokers; and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency |
| 13 | | estimates that radon is responsible for approximately 21,000 |
| 14 | | lung cancer deaths each year; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, In Illinois, 41% of homes, and an even higher |
| 16 | | percentage of schools and commercial buildings, have high |
| 17 | | radon levels; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Any building in Illinois may have elevated levels |
| 19 | | of radon, even if neighboring buildings do not, and elevated |
| 20 | | levels pose a serious health threat to Illinois citizens; and |
