HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the career and legacy of
4Major Edward Vattmann of the United States Army, who
5exemplified a life of courage, leadership, and unwavering
6dedication to the United States of America; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Major Vattmann, born in 1840, served with
8distinction as a military officer, earning the respect of his
9peers and soldiers for his strategic brilliance, steadfast
10duty, and commitment to upholding peace; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Following the death of Sitting Bull, Major
12Vattmann played a pivotal role in helping to negotiate and
13resolve a peace treaty between the Seventh Cavalry and the
14Sioux, easing tensions and preventing further conflict on the
15frontier; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Major Vattmann's service extended beyond the
17battlefield, including his solemn act of giving the last rites
18to President William McKinley following his assassination; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Major Vattmann contributed to domestic harmony by
20assisting in the resolution of the Pullman Strike in Chicago,
21promoting labor peace during a time of national unrest; and

1    WHEREAS, Major Vattmann further demonstrated his
2diplomatic skill by helping to mediate and resolve a land
3dispute between the Catholic Church and the native peoples of
4the Philippines; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Major Vattmann's career and life reflects a
6profound commitment to fostering peace, civic responsibility,
7and the values that define the American spirit; therefore, be
8it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we recognize the extraordinary career and legacy of Major
12Edward Vattmann of the United States Army, whose service to
13his country and community represents the highest ideals of
14courage, faith, and patriotism; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the Lake County Courthouse as an expression of
17our respect and esteem for Major Vattman's courage and service
18to the United States of America.
