HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Arise Chicago on its 35th
4anniversary, celebrating three and a half decades of advancing
5worker rights, dignity, and economic justice since its
6founding in 1991; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Arise Chicago was founded by a diverse group of
8faith leaders committed to addressing systemic poverty and
9economic injustice in the Chicagoland area, grounded in the
10belief that all workers deserve dignity and respect in their
11workplaces; and
 
12    WHEREAS, As the number of Chicago workers facing harsh and
13exploitative working conditions increased, Arise Chicago
14expanded its mission and programming to support workers
15confronting wage theft, discrimination, harassment, and unsafe
16labor environments; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In 2001, Arise Chicago produced the first
18Workers' Rights Manual with easy-to-read language in Spanish,
19Polish, and English, outlining Illinois-specific labor
20protections; it became a model replicated across the country
21and continues to be provided as a free public resource; and

1    WHEREAS, Shortly after producing its Workers' Rights
2Manual, Arise Chicago opened a Worker Center that became a
3vital space for worker education, advocacy, and organizing;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Arise Chicago has partnered with thousands of
6workers to recover more than $10,000,000 in stolen wages and
7compensation and has supported workers in raising their wages
8by more than $6,000,000; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Over the last three and half decades, Arise
10Chicago has emerged as a pioneering organization and a leader
11in the faith-labor movement, partnering with religious
12institutions, labor unions, community organizations, and
13academic institutions to advocate for systemic policy reforms;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we congratulate Arise Chicago on the historic occasion of its
1835th anniversary and commend the organization for its decades
19of service and leadership on behalf of Chicago's workers; and
20be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to Laura Garza, the executive director of Arise
