AMENDMENT TO HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 13

2    AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend House Joint Resolution 13 by
3deleting everything after the heading and replacing it with
4the following:
 
5    "WHEREAS, On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
6Incorporated was founded by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle and eight
7other collegiate women with the mission to cultivate and
8encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote
9unity and friendship among college women, to study and help
10alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to
11improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive
12interest in college life, and to be of "Service to All
13Mankind"; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has a
15rich history of social action; in 1915, Alpha Kappa Alpha
16Sorority, Incorporated hosted its first political action

1conference with human rights activist and Illinois Congressman
2Martin B. Madden as the speaker, marking its commitment to
3progress through advocacy, education, social progress, and
4political engagement; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Soaring to greater heights of service and
6sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
7established its headquarters on the south side of Chicago in
81949, becoming more complex, while expanding to mobilize over
9360,000 initiated members in 1,086 chapters in 50 U.S. states
10and territories and 12 nations, focusing on advocacy and
11service projects aimed at improving socioeconomic, racial,
12political, and environmental issues, further amplifying its
13influence; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's
15diverse collaborative work throughout the United States and
16including but not limited to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, the
17Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the United Arab Emirates
18integrates an elevated level of personal engagement with the
19strong bonds of sisterhood and a productive network of
20community partners; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's annual
22advocacy day event is an opportunity for its members to meet
23and discuss proposed legislation with Illinois lawmakers,

1engage in educational workshops concentrated on the Illinois
2Legislative Black Caucus four key pillars of Illinois
3government, and explore ways to enhance civic engagement; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Illinois is home to 46 Alpha Kappa Alpha
5Sorority, Incorporated chapters, of which 18 are located on
6college and university campuses and 28 are alumnae chapters
7located in communities throughout the State; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The Illinois chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha
9Sorority, Incorporated along with chapters located throughout
10Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South
11Dakota, and Wisconsin are designated as the sorority's Central
12Region, and this region is home to 96 empowered and engaged
13chapters focused on advocacy and service; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Presently, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha
15Sorority, Incorporated serves in each chamber of the 104th
16Illinois General Assembly, and those members are Senator
17Mattie Hunter and Representative Kim du Buclet; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Notably, 48th Lieutenant Governor Juliana
19Stratton, who serves in the State's executive branch, is also
20a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; and
 
21    WHEREAS, On April 30, 2025, Illinois members of Alpha

1Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will participate in Alpha
2Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Day at the Illinois State
3Capitol; and
 
4    WHEREAS, In a collective effort to advance the priorities
5of the respective communities in which they serve, the
6Illinois delegation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
7Incorporated will be joined by the Illinois delegation of
8Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated for Alpha Kappa Alpha
9Sorority, Incorporated Day at the Illinois State Capitol for
10the empowerment of the people; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
13SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare April 30, 2025 as
14Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Day in the State of
15Illinois."
