SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Robert Hugh "Bob" Finley of Sparta,
4who passed away on December 8, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bob Finley, the son of Floyd McKelvy Finley and
6Minnie Elizabeth (Wilson) Finley, was born in Sparta on March
75, 1947; he graduated from Sparta High School; he studied
8education at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania,
9where he played football, sang in the college's touring choir,
10The Genevans, and was a founding member of the male
11double-quartet, The Eight Bells, a group that still exists
12today; and
 
13    WHEREAS, After returning to Sparta, Bob Finley taught
14briefly in Marissa and Evansville before taking a position at
15Sparta Lincoln Middle School, where he taught for more than 40
16years; though the classes he taught varied over the years, he
17particularly enjoyed introducing his students to algebra and
18investing, teaching the latter through having students track
19imaginary portfolios in the stock section of the St. Louis
20Post-Dispatch; he also coached several Sparta sports teams at
21various times, including the Sparta Lincoln track team for
22many years; and

1    WHEREAS, Bob Finley was dedicated to his faith; he was a
2lifetime member of Sparta Reformed Presbyterian Church, where
3he led singing, taught classes, and served as deacon, elder,
4and treasurer, and he was always the one who made sure things
5were completed; he also provided assistance to his parents and
6many other older people in the church, as well as extended
7family; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Bob Finley was devoted to his family, and he will
9be remembered as a faithful husband and a loving father and
10grandfather; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Bob Finley was preceded in death by his parents
12and sister, Ann Elizabeth Finley; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Bob Finley is survived by his wife of 46 years,
14Jeanne May (Wittenborn) Finley; his children, Clay (Jenny),
15Joel (Ruth), Noah, Sarah (Ben Smith), Hannah, and Jonathan; 13
16grandchildren; and his brothers, William "Bill" Finley and
17Paul Finley; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Robert Hugh "Bob" Finley and extend our sincere condolences to
21his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
