1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Robert Hugh "Bob" Finley of Sparta, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on December 8, 2024; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Bob Finley, the son of Floyd McKelvy Finley and | ||||||
6 | Minnie Elizabeth (Wilson) Finley, was born in Sparta on March | ||||||
7 | 5, 1947; he graduated from Sparta High School; he studied | ||||||
8 | education at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, | ||||||
9 | where he played football, sang in the college's touring choir, | ||||||
10 | The Genevans, and was a founding member of the male | ||||||
11 | double-quartet, The Eight Bells, a group that still exists | ||||||
12 | today; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, After returning to Sparta, Bob Finley taught | ||||||
14 | briefly in Marissa and Evansville before taking a position at | ||||||
15 | Sparta Lincoln Middle School, where he taught for more than 40 | ||||||
16 | years; though the classes he taught varied over the years, he | ||||||
17 | particularly enjoyed introducing his students to algebra and | ||||||
18 | investing, teaching the latter through having students track | ||||||
19 | imaginary portfolios in the stock section of the St. Louis | ||||||
20 | Post-Dispatch; he also coached several Sparta sports teams at | ||||||
21 | various times, including the Sparta Lincoln track team for | ||||||
22 | many years; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Bob Finley was dedicated to his faith; he was a | ||||||
2 | lifetime member of Sparta Reformed Presbyterian Church, where | ||||||
3 | he led singing, taught classes, and served as deacon, elder, | ||||||
4 | and treasurer, and he was always the one who made sure things | ||||||
5 | were completed; he also provided assistance to his parents and | ||||||
6 | many other older people in the church, as well as extended | ||||||
7 | family; and | ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Bob Finley was devoted to his family, and he will | ||||||
9 | be remembered as a faithful husband and a loving father and | ||||||
10 | grandfather; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Bob Finley was preceded in death by his parents | ||||||
12 | and sister, Ann Elizabeth Finley; and | ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Bob Finley is survived by his wife of 46 years, | ||||||
14 | Jeanne May (Wittenborn) Finley; his children, Clay (Jenny), | ||||||
15 | Joel (Ruth), Noah, Sarah (Ben Smith), Hannah, and Jonathan; 13 | ||||||
16 | grandchildren; and his brothers, William "Bill" Finley and | ||||||
17 | Paul Finley; therefore, be it | ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Robert Hugh "Bob" Finley and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
21 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
22 | further |
