| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | ||||||
| 3 | congratulate Fire Captain Michael "Mike" McDermott on the | ||||||
| 4 | occasion of his retirement from the Evanston Fire Department | ||||||
| 5 | on January 9, 2024; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Captain McDermott started his career as a | ||||||
| 7 | firefighter/paramedic in December 1997 before becoming a | ||||||
| 8 | paramedic preceptor in 2003; he was promoted to fire captain | ||||||
| 9 | in March 2007; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Captain McDermott's commitment to his profession | ||||||
| 11 | has been exhibited in his training and educational pursuits; | ||||||
| 12 | he received training in extrication and tactical operations | ||||||
| 13 | and certifications in Hazardous Material Operations, Fire | ||||||
| 14 | Apparatus Engineer, and Fire Officer I and II, and he earned | ||||||
| 15 | his associate's degree in fire science from the College of | ||||||
| 16 | DuPage; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Captain McDermott has worked tirelessly to ensure | ||||||
| 18 | the safety of his fellow firefighters on the job, serving on | ||||||
| 19 | the Safety Committee for 25 years and, more recently, leading | ||||||
| 20 | the effort as committee chair; he also improved departmental | ||||||
| 21 | operations by serving on the Standard Operating Guidelines | ||||||
| 22 | Committee for more than 15 years and on the Evanston Fire | ||||||

| 1 | Department Local 742 Negotiation Committee for several years; | ||||||
| 2 | and | ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Captain McDermott is a decorated firefighter who | ||||||
| 4 | received the Craig Stiles Unit Performance Award, the | ||||||
| 5 | second-highest recognition award issued by the Evanston Fire | ||||||
| 6 | Department to members whose combined acts of bravery, | ||||||
| 7 | dedication, and exceptional professional skill resulted in | ||||||
| 8 | saving human lives or property under adverse conditions; he | ||||||
| 9 | was also awarded the Chief's Letter of Commendation for | ||||||
| 10 | exhibiting exceptional skill and professionalism as a | ||||||
| 11 | paramedic; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Captain McDermott's retirement marks the end of | ||||||
| 13 | an era for the Evanston Fire Department; as a decorated | ||||||
| 14 | 26-year veteran, he has exemplified unwavering dedication to | ||||||
| 15 | the safety of the department and its members; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
| 17 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Fire | ||||||
| 18 | Captain Michael "Mike" McDermott on his retirement from the | ||||||
| 19 | Evanston Fire Department after 26 years of dedicated service, | ||||||
| 20 | and we wish him the best in his future endeavors; and be it | ||||||
| 21 | further | ||||||
| 22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
