|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Claire Nabors McLendon; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Claire McLendon was born to Charles James Nabors |
| 5 | | and Melissa Denola Nabors in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18, 1935; |
| 6 | | she was raised in Cleveland and graduated from John Adams High |
| 7 | | School in 1953; as a teen, she attended The Music Settlement in |
| 8 | | Cleveland, where she studied Dalcroze Eurhythmics, music |
| 9 | | theory, and the flute; she also began gardening a plot of land |
| 10 | | at the Harvey Rice School Garden, becoming an experimental |
| 11 | | gardener and a student assistant; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Claire McLendon earned her Bachelor of Science in |
| 13 | | Education from Ohio University in 1957, where she joined a |
| 14 | | local sorority; following graduation, she joined Alpha Kappa |
| 15 | | Alpha Sorority, Inc. at Case Western Reserve University, the |
| 16 | | first AKA graduate chapter in the sorority's history; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Claire McLendon met her future husband, Frederick |
| 18 | | Earl McLendon Jr., while teaching third grade at Paul Revere |
| 19 | | Elementary School in Cleveland; after they married, they made |
| 20 | | their home in Chicago and raised their sons, Eric and Craig; |
| 21 | | and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Claire McLendon continued her teaching career at |
| 2 | | Shoesmith Elementary School in Chicago, where she spent 34 |
| 3 | | years as a learning disabilities teacher, counselor, and |
| 4 | | assistant principal; through hard work and perseverance, and |
| 5 | | after becoming a single mother, she furthered her education, |
| 6 | | earning a Master of Education in Counseling and also in |
| 7 | | Administration and Supervision, as well as a principal |
| 8 | | certificate; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Claire McLendon served as president of Chums, |
| 10 | | Inc., as secretary of the Chicago Chapter of Jack and Jill of |
| 11 | | America, Inc., and as a member of the Afro-American |
| 12 | | Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago; she formed |
| 13 | | many meaningful and lasting friendships while studying |
| 14 | | genealogy, and her unmatched love for genealogy resulted in |
| 15 | | tracing her family back for six generations; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Claire McLendon was a mother, musician, gardener, |
| 17 | | seamstress, and genealogist; she will be remembered as a |
| 18 | | gracious, intelligent, caring, funny, and generous woman whose |
| 19 | | fruitcakes and brownies were enjoyed by many; therefore, be it
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL |
| 21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 22 | | Claire Nabors McLendon and extend our sincere condolences to |
| 23 | | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
