| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of Charles E. Hobson Sr., who passed away | ||||||
| 4 | on September 23, 2023; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson was born in Chicago to Charlene | ||||||
| 6 | and James Hobson on December 4, 1936; he attended Burke | ||||||
| 7 | Elementary School and DuSable High School in Chicago and | ||||||
| 8 | earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Roosevelt | ||||||
| 9 | University; he married Shirley Spencer, and they enjoyed 53 | ||||||
| 10 | years together before her passing; he later married Abisola | ||||||
| 11 | Gallagher, and they enjoyed each other's company between the | ||||||
| 12 | two cities in which they lived; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson had an amazing entrepreneurial | ||||||
| 14 | spirit and owned various businesses over the years, including | ||||||
| 15 | two shoe stores, Hobson Shoes and Carriage House Bootery, in | ||||||
| 16 | the 1960s; he was also a real estate broker, and he owned a | ||||||
| 17 | successful residential and commercial alarm system company, | ||||||
| 18 | Electronic Research and Design; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson was born into the church family of | ||||||
| 20 | Hartzell United Methodist Church and was a member there for | ||||||
| 21 | many years; he later joined St. Mark United Methodist Church; | ||||||
| 22 | he loved the choir and sang in the annual Christmas Messiah | ||||||

| 1 | concert every year for nearly seven decades; he served in the | ||||||
| 2 | lay visitation ministry and the United Methodist men's | ||||||
| 3 | ministry and as a lay leader; one of his treasured | ||||||
| 4 | accomplishments was being named Man of the Year at St. Mark; | ||||||
| 5 | and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson was known for his delicious | ||||||
| 7 | homemade rolls and pound cake; he enjoyed traveling, taking | ||||||
| 8 | trips to Aruba and visiting his children in Atlanta; when it | ||||||
| 9 | came to music, he loved the jazz classics; in recent years, he | ||||||
| 10 | developed a passion for the game of scrabble, enjoying it with | ||||||
| 11 | his beloved companion, Darlene; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson was a man of gentle strength, warm | ||||||
| 13 | elegance, confidence, and deep faith; all of which could be | ||||||
| 14 | seen and felt in the love and nurturing spirit he showed to his | ||||||
| 15 | loved ones and the warmth with which he greeted and took an | ||||||
| 16 | interest in others; he saw the good in everybody; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson was preceded by his son, Paul | ||||||
| 18 | Antony Hobson Sr.; his brother, James Jr.; and his parents; | ||||||
| 19 | and | ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Charles Hobson is survived by his companion, | ||||||
| 21 | Darlene; his children, Michelle, Charles Jr., and Billy; his | ||||||
| 22 | daughter-in-law, Kimberly (Dwayne); and his grandchildren and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 2 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
| 3 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 4 | Charles E. Hobson Sr. and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
| 5 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
| 6 | further | ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 8 | presented to the family of Charles Hobson as an expression of | ||||||
| 9 | our deepest sympathy. | ||||||
