AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 595

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 595 by replacing 
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by adding Section 
53-4000.2 as follows:
 
6    (55 ILCS 5/3-4000.2 new)
7    Sec. 3-4000.2. Office of Public Defense Trial Support.  
8Notwithstanding any provision in this Division to the 
9contrary, the Supreme Court is encouraged to establish a 
10framework for a statewide Office of Public Defense Trial 
11Support. The duties of the Office of Public Defense Trial 
12Support may include, but are not limited to: (1) providing 
13support to public defenders upon request; and (2) in 
14conjunction with all interested parties, including, but not 
15limited to, the Illinois Public Defender Association and the 
16Illinois Council of Chief Defenders, facilitating a strategic

1planning process designed to enhance public defender services, 
2increase resources, and ensure that effective assistance of 
3counsel is rendered regardless of the jurisdiction in which 
4charges are brought. Subject to appropriation and at the 
5direction of the Supreme Court, the Administrative Office of 
6the Illinois Courts shall provide administrative and other 
7support to the Office of Public Defense Trial Support through 
8June 30, 2026. 
 
9    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon 
10becoming law.".
