| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Marian |
| 4 | | Lois Shields Robinson of Chicago, who passed away on May 31, |
| 5 | | 2024; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Marian Robinson was born to Rebecca Jumper and |
| 7 | | Purnell Shields in Chicago on July 29, 1937; she attended |
| 8 | | teaching college; she married Fraser Robinson III in 1960, and |
| 9 | | they resided on Chicago's South Side, where they raised two |
| 10 | | children, Craig and Michelle, the future First Lady of the |
| 11 | | United States; and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Marian Robinson worked as a secretary before |
| 13 | | becoming a stay-at-home mother; she later worked as a bank |
| 14 | | secretary until retirement; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Marian Robinson became a resident of the White |
| 16 | | House during the eight-year presidency of her son-in-law, |
| 17 | | Barack Obama, beginning in 2009; during her tenure, she was |
| 18 | | affectionately known as "first grandma", took care of her |
| 19 | | granddaughters, and successfully avoided the limelight while |
| 20 | | attending various events, concerts, and state dinners; she |
| 21 | | also joined the first family on a number of overseas trips |
| 22 | | before returning to Chicago; and |
