| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the members of the 1974 |
| 4 | | Western Illinois University (WIU) baseball team on the 50th |
| 5 | | anniversary of their incredible season; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, WIU has had an intercollegiate baseball team |
| 7 | | since the 1903-1904 season; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, In 1974, the WIU baseball team broke the school |
| 9 | | record for most victories in a single season, finishing with |
| 10 | | 31 wins and 12 losses, a record that went unbroken for 32 |
| 11 | | years; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, As a result of its unprecedented season, the 1974 |
| 13 | | WIU baseball team received a NCAA at-large bid to play in the |
| 14 | | 1974 NCAA Mid-East Regional Tournament and advanced to the |
| 15 | | championship game, only one game away from the Division II |
| 16 | | College World Series; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of the season, the 1974 WIU |
| 18 | | baseball team set or broke 30 team or individual records, many |
| 19 | | of which remain unbeaten to this day; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, The 1974 WIU baseball team was led by Dick |
|

| 1 | | Pawlow, who oversaw WIU baseball from 1970 to 1998, becoming |
| 2 | | the school's longest-serving head coach; and
|
| 3 | | WHEREAS, The 1974 WIU baseball team, one of the greatest |
| 4 | | teams in WIU Athletics history, was inducted into the WIU |
| 5 | | Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The 1974 WIU baseball team possesses several |
| 7 | | inductees to the WIU Athletics Hall of Fame, including pitcher |
| 8 | | and team captain Ed Gvazdinskas in 1994, second baseman Dennis |
| 9 | | Mantick in 2003, and head coach Dick Pawlow in 2004; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The members of the 1974 WIU baseball team will be |
| 11 | | celebrating the 50th anniversary of their successful season |
| 12 | | during the WIU Baseball Alumni Weekend in Macomb from May 3 to |
| 13 | | May 5, 2024; therefore, be it
|
| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 15 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 16 | | we congratulate the members of the 1974 Western Illinois |
| 17 | | University (WIU) baseball team on the 50th anniversary of |
| 18 | | their incredible season; and be it further
