HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to recognize the 350th anniversary of 
4Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette's arrival to the 
5land of present-day Chicago on September 2, 2023; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Through their expedition in 1673, Louis Jolliet 
7and Father Jacques Marquette became the first Old World 
8Europeans to set foot upon the then uncharted Illinois 
9Territory; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette's 
11efforts laid the foundation for exploratory expeditions within 
12the Illinois Territory; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette's 
14peaceful cooperation and trade with Native Americans  
15established Illinois' longstanding tradition of commerce and 
16economic development while securing its position in the nation 
17as a hub of heritage and transportation; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, In 1973, A mock expedition was organized to 
19recognize the 300th anniversary of the original expedition; 
20and

1    WHEREAS, A third mock expedition, Jolliet Marquette 
2Expedition III, has been planned for this year; and
  
 
3    WHEREAS, Jolliet Marquette Expedition III will begin its 
4journey in St. Ignace, Michigan on May 17, 2023; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Additional information on the history of the 
6original expedition and a list of scheduled events for the 
7third mock expedition is available on the website JM350.com; 
8therefore, be it
  
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
10HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
11we recognize the 350th anniversary of Louis Jolliet and Father 
12Jacques Marquette's arrival to the land of present-day Chicago 
13on September 2, 2023; and be it further
  
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15presented to the members of Jolliet Marquette Expedition III 
16as an expression of our esteem and respect.
