| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the life of Nelson Oliver |
| 4 | | Nelson; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Oliver Nelson was born in 1844 in Norway |
| 6 | | and later moved to St. Joseph, Missouri; at the age of 16, he |
| 7 | | joined the infantry and fought for the Union during the Civil |
| 8 | | War; once he returned home, he became a businessman in St. |
| 9 | | Louis, working for Bignall Brothers; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Oliver Nelson had traveled to Guise, |
| 11 | | France, where he observed the cooperative community, which led |
| 12 | | to his purchase of 125 acres in Edwardsville; in 1890, he |
| 13 | | established the Village of Leclaire, which thrived on his |
| 14 | | leadership of profit-sharing; he established a library within |
| 15 | | Leclaire and along with the library, he created one of the |
| 16 | | first kindergartens in the area; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Nelson Oliver Nelson died on October 5, 1922; the |
| 18 | | factories he built continued to turn a profit for decades |
| 19 | | after his death; people continue to live in the Leclaire |
| 20 | | neighborhood and build homes, and the Leclaire baseball field |
| 21 | | that opened in 1892 continues to operate to this day; |
