AMENDMENT TO HOUSE RESOLUTION 149 


2    AMENDMENT NO. ___.  Amend House Resolution 149 by deleting 
3everything after the heading and replacing it with the 
4following:
 
5    "WHEREAS, The Illinois Natural Areas Preservation Act was 
6passed on August 28, 1963, establishing the Illinois Nature 
7Preserves System; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Illinois Nature Preserves contribute to the 
9public health and welfare and the environmental quality of the 
10State; and
  
 
11    WHEREAS, This visionary law protecting Illinois Natural 
12Areas was a model that many other states followed; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, The Illinois Nature Preserves System protects 622 
14preserves, totaling 121,492 acres; and

1    WHEREAS, Illinois Nature Preserves are habitats for rare, 
2vanishing, threatened, and endangered species; and
  
 
3    WHEREAS, Illinois Nature Preserves are of value for 
4scientific research and  teaching, and they are especially 
5valuable as reservoirs of gene pools that may not survive 
6anywhere else and of which not all potential uses are known; 
7and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Illinois Nature Preserves are places of historic 
9and natural interest and scenic beauty; they are living 
10museums of the native landscape wherein one may experience 
11primeval conditions in a wilderness-like environment; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, The Illinois Nature Preserve System is an 
13enduring resource for people of present and future 
14generations; and
  
 
15    WHEREAS, The Illinois Nature Preserve System will be 
16marking its 60th year in 2023; therefore, be it
  
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
18HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
19we declare August of 2023 as Illinois Nature Preserve Month in 
20the State of Illinois; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That we continue to value the protection and 
2ecological stewardship of Illinois Nature Preserves; and be it 
3further
  
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
5presented to the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission and the 
6Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves as a symbol of our 
7respect and esteem."
