| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate John Duffy of Elgin on |
| 4 | | the occasion of his retirement as a member of the Elgin |
| 5 | | Community College District 509 Board of Trustees after 48 |
| 6 | | years of service; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, John Duffy earned his Bachelor of Arts from Loras |
| 8 | | College in Dubuque, Iowa in 1956 and his Master of Science in |
| 9 | | Education from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska in |
| 10 | | 1961; he also completed post graduate coursework at the |
| 11 | | University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1967; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, With more than six decades of professional |
| 13 | | experience and a commitment to education, John Duffy has |
| 14 | | served his communities as a teacher since 1957 and as a |
| 15 | | dedicated trustee since 1975; in addition to his primary role |
| 16 | | as a teacher at Larkin High School in Elgin from 1962 to 1996, |
| 17 | | he held a number of leadership positions at the school, |
| 18 | | including student council advisor from 1965 to 1971, chair of |
| 19 | | English and Foreign Languages from 1969 to 1977, and chair of |
| 20 | | English and the Reading Division from 1977 to 1996; prior to |
| 21 | | teaching at Larkin High School, he served as a teaching |
| 22 | | assistant with the University of Iowa from 1961 to 1962, a high |
| 23 | | school teacher at Clear Lake Community School District from |
|

| 1 | | 1958 to 1961, and a junior and senior high school teacher and |
| 2 | | coach at Presentation Academy from 1957 to 1958; and
|
| 3 | | WHEREAS, John Duffy has served on the Board of Trustees of |
| 4 | | Elgin Community College (ECC) since 1975, making him the most |
| 5 | | senior and the longest serving trustee in the college's |
| 6 | | history; during his tenure, he has held various roles and has |
| 7 | | been elected chair seven times; he has also represented ECC |
| 8 | | locally and nationally; at the state level, he has served as |
| 9 | | ECC's representative or alternate throughout his years as a |
| 10 | | trustee; in addition to numerous committee assignments, he has |
| 11 | | chaired ECC's Federal Relations Committee seven times and |
| 12 | | served on the Executive Committee nine times; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, John Duffy has served ECC and community colleges |
| 14 | | at large through a number of leadership roles he held in |
| 15 | | national organizations; he was elected twice to the Board of |
| 16 | | Directors of the Association of Community College Trustees |
| 17 | | (ACCT) and appointed to the Board of Directors of the American |
| 18 | | Association of Community Colleges (AACC); in addition, he |
| 19 | | served on the ACCT/AACC Joint Commission on Federal Relations |
| 20 | | for eight years, which he chaired in 1988 and 1989; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, John Duffy has been a respected voice in his |
| 22 | | community and affiliated with a number of professional |
| 23 | | organizations, including the Illinois Association of Teachers |
|

| 1 | | of English, the National Council of Teachers of English, the |
| 2 | | Illinois Classical Conference, the American Classical League, |
| 3 | | the Elgin Association of School Administrators, the Elgin |
| 4 | | Teachers Association, the Illinois Education Association, and |
| 5 | | the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA); |
| 6 | | and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his career, John Duffy has been |
| 8 | | recognized for his leadership, his service to his communities, |
| 9 | | and his contributions to the field of education, including |
| 10 | | receiving the Outstanding Young Educator Award from the Elgin |
| 11 | | Jaycees, being named the Kane County Distinguished Educator of |
| 12 | | the Year, being listed among the Outstanding Young Men in |
| 13 | | America, being recognized as an ACCT Outstanding Trustee for |
| 14 | | the Central Region, receiving the ACCT Central Region Trustee |
| 15 | | Leadership Award, and being honored as the 2002 ICCTA Trustee |
| 16 | | of the Year Award; his accomplishments have led to national |
| 17 | | and international recognition, and he has been featured in |
| 18 | | multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in |
| 19 | | American Education, and Who's Who in the World; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, John Duffy and his wife, Anne, are the parents of |
| 21 | | four children, Jane, Paul, Sarah, and Steven; therefore, be it
|
| 22 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 23 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
|

| 1 | | we congratulate John Duffy on his retirement from the Elgin |
| 2 | | Community College District 509 Board of Trustees after 48 |
| 3 | | years of service, recognize his status as the institution's |
| 4 | | longest serving trustee, and thank him for his decades of hard |
| 5 | | work and commitment to the college, the students, and his |
| 6 | | communities; and be it further

| 7 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 8 | | presented to John Duffy as an expression of our esteem and |
| 9 | | respect.
