| 1 | | AN ACT concerning education. |
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly: |
| 4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |
| 5 | | 27-13.1 as follows: |
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-13.1) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-13.1) |
| 7 | | Sec. 27-13.1. Environmental education. |
| 8 | | (a) In every public school there shall be instruction, |
| 9 | | study and discussion of current problems and needs in the |
| 10 | | conservation of natural resources, including but not limited |
| 11 | | to air pollution, water pollution, waste reduction and |
| 12 | | recycling, the effects of excessive use of pesticides, |
| 13 | | preservation of wilderness areas, forest management, |
| 14 | | protection of wildlife and humane care of domestic animals. |
| 15 | | (b) Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, every public |
| 16 | | school shall provide instruction on climate change, which |
| 17 | | shall include, but not be limited to, identifying the |
| 18 | | environmental and ecological impacts of climate change on |
| 19 | | individuals and communities and evaluating solutions for |
| 20 | | addressing and mitigating the impact of climate change and |
| 21 | | shall be in alignment with State learning standards, as |
| 22 | | appropriate. |
