SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Daniel L. "Dan" Schmidt of Groveland, who passed away on July 5, 2022; and

WHEREAS, Dan Schmidt was born to Robert and Jean (Nelson) Schmidt in Peoria on January 12, 1951; he received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois; he married Maureen Ritchie in Naples, Maine on August 1, 1987; and

WHEREAS, Dan Schmidt worked as a police officer for nine years before graduating from law school, serving as a patrol officer with the Peoria County Sheriff's Department for one and a half years and as a patrolman with the Peoria Police Department for seven and a half years; and

WHEREAS, Dan Schmidt practiced law as a defense attorney of civil lawsuits for 19 years after earning his juris doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was elected to The Order of the Coif and The Order of the Barristers; he was admitted to practice law in Illinois, Missouri, and Maine; he was elected to the 3rd District Court of Appeals in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Dan Schmidt was a life member of Ducks Unlimited and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton; and

WHEREAS, Dan Schmidt was an avid sportsman and conservationist; he loved spending time in a duck blind with his friends and son, Matt; and

WHEREAS, Dan Schmidt is survived by his wife, Maureen Schmidt; his son, Matt (Emily) Schmidt; and his brothers, Frank (Vicki) Schmidt and Steve (Patricia) Schmidt; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Daniel L. "Dan" Schmidt and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dan Schmidt as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
