SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Charles Allan "Lanny" Lutz of Los Angeles, California, who passed away on January 5th, 2021 at the age of 79; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz was born to Ruth Flarida Lutz and Allan Barr Lutz in Washington D.C. on January 1, 1942; for a short time after the war, the family lived in Birmingham, Michigan; they ultimately settled in Darien, Connecticut; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz was a talented high school athlete; he won multiple sailing races on Long Island Sound; and

WHEREAS, In 1964, Lanny Lutz earned a bachelor's degree in English from Yale University; he pursued his passion for acting in Yale's theater program; all the while, he also won awards for his piano playing skills; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz's fluency and interest in the French language led him to take a yearlong leave of absence from Yale; during a subsequent overseas trip to France, he met Katia Brillie; the two were married in Paris; and

WHEREAS, After Lanny Lutz moved to New York City in 1967, his daughter, Natalie Cebčle, was born; he also dedicated himself to full-time acting; soon, the family relocated to London so that Lanny could study at the acclaimed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA); and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz earned an Honours Diploma from RADA and was bestowed with the Bancroft Gold Medal; one of his memorable performances included the title role in Tartuffe; he even earned praise from the Canadian actress and writer Alexandra Sellers; and

WHEREAS, In 1971, after graduation from RADA, Lanny Lutz lived in New York City and Los Angeles; his second-to-last destination was in the Chicago area, specifically Oak Park, which he called home for more than 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz was instrumental in the development of a thriving theater scene in Oak Park; he founded the Black-White Dialogue with Gerald Clay in 1996 and was a member of the Oak Park Festival Theater's Board of Directors; in his capacity with the latter organization, he played the lead role in All My Sons in 2005; one year later, he reprised his role from Tartuffe; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz founded a contractor's reference service entitled Lanny's List; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz was a member of the Actors' Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild/American Federation of Television and Radio Artists; he was briefly featured in the movie, Batman: the Dark Knight; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz was also a wine connoisseur and an 18-wheeler truck driver; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Allan Lutz; and

WHEREAS, Lanny Lutz is survived by his daughter, Natalie Lutz; his ex-wife, Katia Lutz; his grandchildren, Loic Tatischeff and Magalie Tatischeff; his sister, Carolyn Gibson; his nephew, Ian Gibson; his niece, Elizabeth (Liz) Gibson; and his dear friend from Oak Park, Janet Bohler; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Charles Allan "Lanny" Lutz and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lanny Lutz as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
