|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that |
| 3 | | is neurobiological in origin and is characterized by |
| 4 | | difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and |
| 5 | | by poor spelling and decoding abilities; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Secondary consequences of dyslexia may include |
| 7 | | problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading |
| 8 | | experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background |
| 9 | | knowledge; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Social emotional concerns and long-term |
| 11 | | consequences, including lower academic achievement and higher |
| 12 | | dropout rates, can arise from the negative impact of dyslexia |
| 13 | | and poor reading abilities if not properly addressed with |
| 14 | | appropriate intervention; therefore, be it
|
| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 16 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 17 | | we urge public and private schools and the Illinois State |
| 18 | | Board of Education to recognize that dyslexia has significant |
| 19 | | educational implications that can be addressed with |
| 20 | | appropriate intervention and supports; and be it further
