Amends the School Code. Requires a school district to offer a program to prepare students enrolled in grades 6 through 12 for a career and technical education pathway by introducing students to career exploration opportunities that allow students to explore a wide variety of high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand career fields. Sets forth what a school district shall provide in its career and technical education pathway program. Provides for rulemaking. Effective immediately.

A BILL FOR

AN ACT concerning education.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections 10-20.73 and 34-18.67 as follows:

(105 ILCS 5/10-20.73 new)

Sec. 10-20.73. Career and education pathway program.

(a) A school district that enrolls students in any of grades 6 through 12 shall offer a program to prepare students enrolled in grades 6 through 12 for a career and technical education pathway by introducing students to career exploration opportunities that allow students to explore a wide variety of high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand career fields.

(b) A school district shall provide in its career and technical education pathway program both of the following:

(1) Career exploration and career development activities through an organized, systematic framework that is designed to aid students enrolled in grades 6 through 12 to make informed plans and decisions about their future education, career opportunities, and programs of study while participating in a career and technical education program. The career exploration and career development activities may include the following:

(A) introductory courses or activities that are focused on career exploration and career awareness, including the exploration of nontraditional careers or fields;

(B) readily available career and labor market information, including information on:

(i) occupational supply and demand;

(ii) educational requirements;

(iii) careers aligned to State or local priorities, as appropriate; and

(iv) employment sectors;

(C) programs and activities related to the development of student graduation and career plans;

(D) career guidance counselors and academic counselors who provide information on postsecondary education and career options;

(E) any other activity that advances student knowledge of career opportunities and assists students in making informed decisions about their future education and employment goals, including nontraditional careers or fields; or

(F) providing students with a strong experience in an industry that allows the student to gain a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of that industry.

(2) Professional development opportunities for teachers related to career and technical education for students enrolled in grades 6 through 12.

(c) The State Board of Education may adopt any rules necessary to implement this Section.

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon becoming law.
