HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Military service members of Illinois and across 
3the United States have sworn an oath to protect our nation's 
4freedoms, even if it means the cost of their own life; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, These patriots join as young as seventeen years of 
6age and are entrusted with the lives of their battle buddies, 
7wingmen, and shipmates, along with various security clearances 
8which entrust them with classified information; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, We already give our service members waivers based 
10on their age for such things as renting a car and checking into 
11a hotel; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, If they are old enough to die for our country or 
13be tried in court as an adult and if they are wise and 
14responsible enough to handle classified information that could 
15put our nation at risk, serve on a jury, and shape our 
16elections' outcomes, then they should be old enough to make 
17well-informed decisions regarding their own personal health 
18and safety; and
  
 
19    WHEREAS, Withholding their ability to purchase tobacco or 
20alcohol or obtain a conceal carry license takes away the 
21privileges of adulthood for those already acting with the full

1responsibility and culpability of a legal adult; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, By not entrusting them with the full rights and 
3privileges of adulthood, we are dishonoring the freedoms and 
4liberties that they have voluntarily sworn to protect, 
5disrespecting the sacrifices that they make, and disregarding 
6the responsible, wise, and heroic grown men and women that they 
7have become; therefore, be it
  
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
9HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
10we state our belief that the State of Illinois should grant 
11those currently serving on Active, Guard, and Reserve status 
12with the rights and privileges of adulthood; and be it further
  
 
13    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 
14delivered to all Illinois constitutional officers, the Speaker 
15and Minority Leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, 
16and the President and Minority Leader of the Illinois Senate.
