| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Matthew Eugene Thery of | ||||||
| 4 | Sesser on being elected as Illinois' 70th Youth Governor; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery is the first governor to be elected | ||||||
| 6 | from Southern Illinois since 2005; he will receive a chance to | ||||||
| 7 | act as governor for a day and visit Washington D.C. with his | ||||||
| 8 | fellow Youth Governors from around the country; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery was welcomed home after his victory | ||||||
| 10 | with a parade; during his campaign, he participated in debates, | ||||||
| 11 | press conferences, and primaries before the final competition | ||||||
| 12 | against three Chicago-area students; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery received nearly 1,200 votes from | ||||||
| 14 | student delegates; he appreciates all that his Sesser-Valier | ||||||
| 15 | classmates did for his campaign and has stated that "it hasn't | ||||||
| 16 | quite sunk in yet, because going into this, nobody expected for | ||||||
| 17 | me to come out on top. This goes to show that hard work can get | ||||||
| 18 | you places."; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery is a junior at Sesser-Valier High | ||||||
| 20 | School and has been involved in nearly every extra-curricular | ||||||
| 21 | activity offered at his school; he also stays active in his | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | community; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery is a multi-sport athlete with a | ||||||
| 3 | passion for baseball; he enjoys riding motorcycles, lifting, | ||||||
| 4 | and shooting guns; he is also involved with the football team, | ||||||
| 5 | the track team, and the basketball team; he is active with the | ||||||
| 6 | Future Farmers of America, the Outdoorsmen Club, the National | ||||||
| 7 | Honor Society, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; he is | ||||||
| 8 | a member of the school band and the math team; he also takes | ||||||
| 9 | part in the Scholar Bowl and is an active member of the student | ||||||
| 10 | council; he shows his school spirit as a member of the Spirit | ||||||
| 11 | Club; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery also works for Acosta Construction | ||||||
| 13 | and gives back to his community by doing volunteer work with | ||||||
| 14 | the 4H Youth Volunteer Program and the Sesser Little League; | ||||||
| 15 | and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, While Matthew Thery remains busy with his | ||||||
| 17 | extra-curricular activities, he has also been able to achieve | ||||||
| 18 | high academic success; he was placed on the honor roll at his | ||||||
| 19 | high school and tied for valedictorian in his class with a 4.0 | ||||||
| 20 | GPA; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Matthew Thery has been interested in politics from | ||||||
| 22 | a young age and enjoys debates; he plans to serve in the U.S. | ||||||

| 1 | Air Force after completing the Air Force Reserve Officer | ||||||
| 2 | Training Corps program in college; he hopes to remain involved | ||||||
| 3 | in state and local politics in the future; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 5 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 6 | we congratulate Matthew Eugene Thery on being elected as | ||||||
| 7 | Illinois' 70th Youth Governor and hope that his success will | ||||||
| 8 | encourage all students to dream big and find an interest in | ||||||
| 9 | state government; and be it further
| ||||||
| 10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 11 | presented to Matthew Thery as a symbol of our respect and | ||||||
| 12 | esteem.
