Amends the School Code. Provides that, beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, each school district that maintains grade 9 must include in its curriculum and require all ninth grade students to take a unit of instruction on home economics that includes, but is not limited to, instruction on family finance, wellness, personal hygiene, food preparation, and nutrition. Effective immediately.

| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
| 5 | | 27-23.13 as follows: |
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-23.13 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 27-23.13. Home economics course. Beginning with the |
| 8 | | 2019-2020 school year, each school district that maintains |
| 9 | | grade 9 must include in its curriculum and require all ninth |
| 10 | | grade students to take a unit of instruction on home economics |
| 11 | | that includes, but is not limited to, instruction on family |
| 12 | | finance, wellness, personal hygiene, food preparation, and |
| 13 | | nutrition. The school board shall determine the minimum amount |
| 14 | | of instructional time that qualifies as a unit of instruction |
| 15 | | satisfying the requirements of this Section.

| 16 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
| 17 | | becoming law.
