SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Nancy Hadley Shapland of Champaign, who passed away on October 24, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Shapland was born to Roy O. and Evelyn Hadley on December 18, 1937; she attended Purdue University and then moved to Champaign, where she worked at the Meyer Capel Law Firm and met and later married George Shapland; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Shapland had a passion for music and piano; she played piano for the Purdue Glee Club in college and later was the pianist for many of the Junior League performances and the Champaign Rotary Club; she had perfect pitch and could play anything she heard; she was also known to frequently play between sets of band performances; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Shapland started showing dogs in the early 1970s, starting with golden retrievers and then bichon frises; she finished championships with over 17 dogs; she was an American Kennel Club judge and was a dedicated and respected member of the Bichon Frise Club of America, where she served on many committees, held the office of treasurer, and served as president for eight years; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Shapland loved sports, especially her children's sporting activities in high school, and was known to "help" the referees call their games to such an extent that her friends gave her a referee uniform shirt of her own to wear to high school games; she also once received a "technical foul" from a referee at an Illinois basketball game while expressing her dislike for a call during a time out; her bridge club was also a very special part of her life for over 50 years; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Shapland was preceded in death by her parents; and

WHEREAS, Nancy Shapland is survived by her husband of 55 years, George; her children, Charlie (Julie) Shapland and his children, Nick and Hadley, Mark Shapland and his children, Dan, John, and Drew, and their mother, Debby, and Laura (Brent Koester) Shapland and her daughter, Chloe; and Nancy's sister, Sarah Hadley; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Nancy Hadley Shapland and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Nancy Shapland as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
