| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of David Kay Ph.D. of Urbana, who passed |
| 4 | | away on September 2, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Professor Kay was the son of Warren and Josephine |
| 6 | | Kay and grew up in Philadelphia; he received his early |
| 7 | | education in Philadelphia public schools; he earned a bachelor |
| 8 | | of art at the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in English |
| 9 | | at Princeton University; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Professor Kay joined the Department of English at |
| 11 | | the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1966; he was |
| 12 | | actively involved in the English Department and served in |
| 13 | | administrative roles, including as associate head; he was a |
| 14 | | dedicated and inspiring teacher of Shakespeare and other early |
| 15 | | modern English writers; he was also internationally recognized |
| 16 | | as an expert on the plays and poems of Ben Johnson; he wrote a |
| 17 | | biography of Johnson and an influential series of articles on |
| 18 | | his self-presentation in his early plays; he was also the |
| 19 | | editor of two books; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Professor Kay and his family attended First |
| 21 | | Presbyterian Church of Urbana, where he served in many roles, |
| 22 | | including on the session, as a deacon, and as part of the Earth |
