| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Gladys Patsy Murray of Chicago, who |
| 4 | | passed away on May 24, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Gladys Murray was born in Shreveport County, |
| 6 | | Louisiana to Ed and Ida Birdsong on October 10, 1924; during |
| 7 | | her childhood, one of her greatest joys was playing with her |
| 8 | | nieces and nephews, who were close to her in age; she attended |
| 9 | | the Old Greenwood Baptist Church with her parents and siblings; |
| 10 | | education was very important to her, and she studied at the |
| 11 | | one-room schoolhouse within her parish; she married Johnnie |
| 12 | | Murray in Shreveport, Louisiana on May 13, 1939; after a short |
| 13 | | stay in Shreveport, she and her husband moved to Oakland, |
| 14 | | California; they moved to Chicago in 1947; the mother of ten |
| 15 | | children, she emphasized the importance of an education; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Gladys Murray was a member of Holy Temple Baptist |
| 17 | | Church, where her husband served as a deacon; later in life, |
| 18 | | she attended the churches of her children; she was known as a |
| 19 | | stylish dresser and the life of the party; she became a loving |
| 20 | | second mother to many of her children's friends, and she will |
| 21 | | be missed by all who knew her; and
|
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Gladys Murray is survived by her children, Jim, |
