| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of John R. Foreman of Champaign, who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on June 30, 2018; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, John Foreman was born in Decatur to Forrest and | ||||||
| 6 | Susan Jenkins Foreman on September 3, 1952; he graduated from | ||||||
| 7 | Atwood-Hammond High School in 1970; he married Sharon | ||||||
| 8 | Koeberlein at St. Mary's Church in Pesotum on September 21, | ||||||
| 9 | 1973; he graduated from the University of Illinois in 1977; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, John Foreman began his career as a reporter at The | ||||||
| 11 | News-Gazette in 1977; in quick succession, he was named night | ||||||
| 12 | city editor, city editor, managing editor, and | ||||||
| 13 | editor-in-chief; in 2003, he became publisher of The | ||||||
| 14 | News-Gazette; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, John Foreman was a distinguished journalist whose | ||||||
| 16 | keen news judgment, outstanding writing and editing abilities, | ||||||
| 17 | and passion for the truth were the engines that drove the | ||||||
| 18 | newsroom to be consistently recognized as among the best in the | ||||||
| 19 | state; he was a past chairman of the Illinois First Amendment | ||||||
| 20 | Center and also served as president of the Illinois Press | ||||||
| 21 | Association and the Illinois Associated Press Editors; he was a | ||||||
| 22 | former chairman of the Mid-America Press Institute and "Project | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Sunshine," a Society of Professional Journalists project on | ||||||
| 2 | access to government; he was the first recipient of the James | ||||||
| 3 | C. Craven Award for Freedom of the Press from the Illinois | ||||||
| 4 | Press Association and only the second recipient of the Illinois | ||||||
| 5 | AP Editors Lincoln League of Journalists Award; in 2006, he was | ||||||
| 6 | named the Illinois Journalist of the Year by the faculty at | ||||||
| 7 | Northern Illinois University; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, John Foreman loved his family, his dogs, his | ||||||
| 9 | community, and The News-Gazette; he enjoyed restoring and | ||||||
| 10 | collecting fountain pens and taking time to put pen to paper; | ||||||
| 11 | he was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, as well as a fan of | ||||||
| 12 | the Chicago Bears and the Fighting Illini; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, John Foreman is survived by his wife, Sharon; his | ||||||
| 14 | children, Shannon (Scott Smith) and Rob Foreman; his brother, | ||||||
| 15 | Michael (Darlene) Stratman; and his sisters, Patricia | ||||||
| 16 | (Maurice) Sefton and Maryan (Robert Smith) Sneed; therefore, be | ||||||
| 17 | it

| 18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 20 | John R. Foreman and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
| 21 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
| 22 | further
