| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Margaret Catherine "Marge" McClain, who |
| 4 | | passed away on June 12, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain was born in Quincy to George Walter |
| 6 | | and Alice (Hellstern) McIntire on January 26, 1920; she |
| 7 | | attended St. Peter Grade School and graduated from Quincy High |
| 8 | | School in 1937; she developed an interest in reporting and was |
| 9 | | able to interview Amelia Earhart for her school paper; she |
| 10 | | attended Gem City College from 1937 to 1938; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain was a copywriter for the |
| 12 | | Halbach-Schroeder Department Store from 1938 to 1941 when she |
| 13 | | was promoted to advertising manager, a position she held until |
| 14 | | 1943; she was a volunteer Red Cross nurse's aide in 1942 and |
| 15 | | 1943; she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October |
| 16 | | 1943 as a combat correspondent and served two years as a public |
| 17 | | relations officer; she returned to Quincy and attended Quincy |
| 18 | | College; she married Elmo "Mac" McClain on December 26, 1946; |
| 19 | | and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain taught special education at Quincy |
| 21 | | High School from 1970 to 1972; in 1976, she began teaching |
| 22 | | sixth grade at St. Peter's Grade School; she enjoyed taking the |
|

| 1 | | 8th grade class on its annual trip to Washington, D.C.; she |
| 2 | | retired in 1990; and |
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain loved parties and was famous for her |
| 4 | | New Year's Eve celebrations; she enjoyed spending time in her |
| 5 | | backyard, watching children play, bird watching, and looking at |
| 6 | | the sunsets; she also enjoyed traveling, golf, dancing, music, |
| 7 | | board games, reading, crossword puzzles, bridge, cribbage, |
| 8 | | knitting, oil painting, watching old movies, family reunions, |
| 9 | | Atlantis, and card games; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain took part in an Honor Flight to |
| 11 | | Washington, D.C. and was honored to be the Grand Marshal of the |
| 12 | | Veterans Day parade on November 4, 2017; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain was preceded in death by her |
| 14 | | parents; her husband, Ill. State Rep. Elmo McClain; her son, |
| 15 | | Patrick; her sisters, Mary Stegeman and Betty Ruble; her |
| 16 | | brother, Edward McIntire; her nephews, Ted Ruble and Dick |
| 17 | | Stegeman; and her niece, Alice Ann Stegeman; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Marge McClain is survived by her children, Michael |
| 19 | | (Lucinda) McClain, Kevin (Linda) McClain, Kathy Henigan, Molly |
| 20 | | (Jeff) Stroot, Chris (Mary Lou) McClain, Mary Grant, and Anne |
| 21 | | (Paul) Sidrys; her grandchildren, Patrick (Sarah) McClain, |
| 22 | | Colleen (Billy) Ogden, Dan (Melissa) McClain, Glen McClain, |

| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 13 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 14 | | Margaret Catherine "Marge" McClain, and extend our sincere |
| 15 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
| 16 | | her; and be it further
|
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 18 | | presented to the family of Marge McClain as an expression of |
| 19 | | our deepest sympathy.
