SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Margaret Catherine "Marge" McClain, who passed away on June 12, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain was born in Quincy to George Walter and Alice (Hellstern) McIntire on January 26, 1920; she attended St. Peter Grade School and graduated from Quincy High School in 1937; she developed an interest in reporting and was able to interview Amelia Earhart for her school paper; she attended Gem City College from 1937 to 1938; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain was a copywriter for the Halbach-Schroeder Department Store from 1938 to 1941 when she was promoted to advertising manager, a position she held until 1943; she was a volunteer Red Cross nurse's aide in 1942 and 1943; she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1943 as a combat correspondent and served two years as a public relations officer; she returned to Quincy and attended Quincy College; she married Elmo "Mac" McClain on December 26, 1946; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain taught special education at Quincy High School from 1970 to 1972; in 1976, she began teaching sixth grade at St. Peter's Grade School; she enjoyed taking the 8th grade class on its annual trip to Washington, D.C.; she retired in 1990; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain loved parties and was famous for her New Year's Eve celebrations; she enjoyed spending time in her backyard, watching children play, bird watching, and looking at the sunsets; she also enjoyed traveling, golf, dancing, music, board games, reading, crossword puzzles, bridge, cribbage, knitting, oil painting, watching old movies, family reunions, Atlantis, and card games; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain took part in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. and was honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Veterans Day parade on November 4, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ill. State Rep. Elmo McClain; her son, Patrick; her sisters, Mary Stegeman and Betty Ruble; her brother, Edward McIntire; her nephews, Ted Ruble and Dick Stegeman; and her niece, Alice Ann Stegeman; and

WHEREAS, Marge McClain is survived by her children, Michael (Lucinda) McClain, Kevin (Linda) McClain, Kathy Henigan, Molly (Jeff) Stroot, Chris (Mary Lou) McClain, Mary Grant, and Anne (Paul) Sidrys; her grandchildren, Patrick (Sarah) McClain, Colleen (Billy) Ogden, Dan (Melissa) McClain, Glen McClain, Meredith McClain, Bridget McClain, Meghan McClain, Todd (Dana Hamada) Henigan, Flynn Henigan, Alex (Eden) Henigan, Allison Stroot, Sam (Isabella Vel) Stroot, Garrett (Michelle) Stroot, Hannah Stroot, Tyler (Kristen) McClain, Laura McClain, Brian McClain, Gerry Grant, Libby Grant, Charlie Grant, Lydia Sidrys, Will Sidrys, Lucy Sidrys, and Vivian Sidrys; her great-grandchildren, Zoe and Rowan McClain, Sean, Katie, and Mac Ogden, Fiona McClain, Roy and Wes Henigan, Ray Henigan, Avery McClain, and a Baby McClain on the way; her nephews, John (Trish) Ruble and Robert (Sheila) Ruble; and numerous great-nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Margaret Catherine "Marge" McClain, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Marge McClain as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
