| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Peter H. Huizenga of Oak Brook, who |
| 4 | | passed away on May 2, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was born in a Dutch community |
| 6 | | outside of Chicago to a family of garbage haulers in 1939; as a |
| 7 | | child during summers, he worked on a garbage truck from 2 a.m. |
| 8 | | until noon each day and learned the value of hard work, and the |
| 9 | | power of friendship, faith, and determination; after |
| 10 | | graduating from Hope College, he was a Captain in the United |
| 11 | | States Army Reserve and then attended law school at the |
| 12 | | University of Illinois; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga began his career practicing law at |
| 14 | | the firm of Hlustik, Huizenga, Williams and VanderWoude; in |
| 15 | | 1968, he joined his family's garbage business, which evolved |
| 16 | | into Waste Management Inc. and became a Fortune 500 company; at |
| 17 | | Waste Management, he served as a Director for 30 years, held |
| 18 | | various office roles, and helped take the company public in |
| 19 | | 1972; Waste Management was the largest waste disposal company |
| 20 | | in the world; he was also an early investor in Blockbuster |
| 21 | | Video and many other businesses; and
|
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was a philanthropist and active |
|

| 1 | | with the Big Shoulders Fund, Timothy Christian Schools, Christ |
| 2 | | Church of Oak Brook, Trinity Christian College, Elim Christian |
| 3 | | Services, Hope College, the Boy Scouts of America, and many |
| 4 | | other organizations; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga loved his family, his faith, and |
| 6 | | making a difference in people's lives through philanthropy and |
| 7 | | business pursuits; relationships and helping others were at the |
| 8 | | core of who he was as a person and as a businessman; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was the loving husband of 50 years |
| 10 | | of Heidi; the father of Betsy (Dave) Bradley, Greta Huizenga, |
| 11 | | Peter Jr. (Abby) Huizenga, and Tim Huizenga; the grandfather of |
| 12 | | Elizabeth, Matthew, William, and Michael Bradley, Soleil and |
| 13 | | Noah Huizenga Giesen, and Hally, Hope, Peter III "Tripp" and |
| 14 | | Hannah Huizenga; and the brother of Sue Kanis, Virginia |
| 15 | | "Ginger" Jurries, John Charles "J.C." Huizenga, and the late |
| 16 | | Elizabeth "B.J." Buntrock; therefore, be it
|
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 19 | | Peter H. Huizenga and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 20 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
| 21 | | further
