| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are deeply |
| 3 | | saddened to learn of the death
of former First Lady Barbara |
| 4 | | Pierce Bush of Houston, Texas, who passed away on April 17, |
| 5 | | 2018; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Bush was born on June 8, 1925 in Rye, New |
| 7 | | York to Marvin and Pauline
Pierce; she married George H. W. |
| 8 | | Bush on January 6, 1945; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Barbara and George Bush were married for over 73 |
| 10 | | years and had six
children, 14 grandchildren, and seven |
| 11 | | great-grandchildren; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Bush is the second person in American |
| 13 | | history to be First Lady of
the United States and the mother of |
| 14 | | a United States President; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Bush was devoted to improving literacy and |
| 16 | | founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy which |
| 17 | | has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to create and expand |
| 18 | | literacy
programs in every state; and |
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Bush championed the National Literacy |
| 20 | | Act, which was signed
into law in 1991 and brought widespread |

| 1 | | attention to improving national literacy; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Bush will be remembered for her sense of |
| 3 | | humor, her friendly and welcoming demeanor, and for being a |

| 5 | | WHEREAS, Barbara Bush is survived by her husband, former |
| 6 | | President George H. W.
Bush; five children, former President |
| 7 | | George W. Bush, former Governor Jeb Bush, Neil Bush,
Marvin |
| 8 | | Bush, and Dorothy Bush Koch; 14 grandchildren; and seven |
| 9 | | great-grandchildren;
she was preceded in death by her daughter, |
| 10 | | Robin Bush; therefore, be it

| 11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 12 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 13 | | Barbara Pierce Bush and extend
our sincere condolences to her |
| 14 | | family, friends, and all who knew, loved, or were inspired by |
