SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of John Fitzallen Moore, who passed away on January 31, 2018; and

WHEREAS, John Moore was born in London, England to American poets, Louis Untermeyer and Virginia Moore on February 23, 1928; he was born John Moore Untermeyer and was renamed after his parents divorced; he grew up in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and at his mother's home in Scottsville, Virginia; he was educated at the High Mowing School in New Hampshire, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he co-founded the Tech Model Railroad Club, and Harvard University; he earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Columbia University, with a thesis proving the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide on the surface temperature of the planet Venus; and

WHEREAS, Work in the field of medical electronics and x-ray products led to John Moore founding Bio-Imaging Research, Inc. (BIR) in Lincolnshire in 1980; among many other technologies, BIR devised improvements for computed tomography (CAT) scanners; he retired as Chairman of the Board and CEO of BIR in 2007; and

WHEREAS, John Moore held over 20 patents; he was named KPMG Peat Marwich High Tech Entrepreneur of the Year in 1987; he also received the Arthur Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1989; and

WHEREAS, John Moore served as member and Chairman of the Naval Surface Weapons Board of the U.S. Naval Research Advisory Committee for several years; he was also a member of the scientific honor society Sigma Xi; and

WHEREAS, John Moore's retirement was filled with a continued enthusiasm for family, hobbies, and international travel; and

WHEREAS, John Moore was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah, and his son, Robin; and

WHEREAS, John Moore is survived by his wife, Betty-Ann; his children, Laurel (Michael White) Moore, Marjorie (John) Fish, Sheila (James) Kaplan, Christopher (Tracy Conrad) Moore, and Jonathan Moore; his 12 grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Laurence Untermeyer; his sister-in-law, Jean Jorgenson; and his nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of John Fitzallen Moore and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John Moore as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
