| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Herbert Lee Hedgeman, who passed away on |
| 4 | | December 29, 2017; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was born in Chicago to Fannie Mae |
| 6 | | Hedgeman Lafayette on November 7, 1928; he attended Chicago |
| 7 | | Public Schools; he exhibited a strong entrepreneurial spirit |
| 8 | | and work ethic at the age of six and began his own shoeshine |
| 9 | | business; he briefly attended Mosley High School before joining |
| 10 | | the United States Army at the age of 16 and served in World War |
| 11 | | II; after the war ended, he remained in Germany, where he |
| 12 | | became fluent in the language and played the saxophone; upon |
| 13 | | his return, he attended Wilberforce University, where he |
| 14 | | pledged Kappa Alpha Psi in 1954; he married Tricka Harris in |
| 15 | | 1971; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman worked a number of jobs after his |
| 17 | | college graduation, including as a caseworker for the Cook |
| 18 | | County Department of Public Aid; the Rubloff Real Estate |
| 19 | | Company hired him as their first African American realtor after |
| 20 | | his success with building homes and integrating several |
| 21 | | neighborhoods; and
|
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman purchased the Sportsman Inn |
|

| 1 | | Motel in 1973 and during its renovations, received approval to |
| 2 | | build a 92-unit building to house veterans; during his more |
| 3 | | than 50 years in business, he purchased numerous properties in |
| 4 | | Illinois, Michigan, and Georgia; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman established the Herbert Hedgeman |
| 6 | | Foundation, which helped Wilberforce University students |
| 7 | | earning a "C" average; he sponsored the WVON's "Bob Shaw" show, |
| 8 | | and he gave many African Americans advice on how to go into |
| 9 | | business and sustain success; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was preceded in death by his |
| 11 | | wife, Tricka; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman is survived by his son, Kenneth |
| 13 | | Hedgeman; his daughters, Denita Hedgeman, Kori Scurlock, TK |
| 14 | | Karadzovski, and Cici Foster (Kevin); his grandchildren, |
| 15 | | Avante and Dante Hedgeman, and Diamond and Imani Foster; his |
| 16 | | great-granddaughter, Ayanna Hedgeman; and many other relatives |
| 17 | | and friends; therefore, be it

| 18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 20 | | Herbert Lee Hedgeman and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 21 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
| 22 | | further
