SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to 
3learn of the death of Douglas E. "Papa" Dee of Rock Island, who 
4passed away on January 6, 2018; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Douglas Dee was born in Ohio to Edwin D. and 
6Josephine McGlothlin Dee on April 11, 1951; he graduated from 
7Moline High School in 1969 and enlisted in the U.S. Army on 
8December  24, 1969, where he served as a combat medic in Vietnam 
9and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam 
10Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, and the Republic 
11of Vietnam Campaign Medal; he married Judith Montgomery in Port 
12Byron on February 6, 1999; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, In retirement, Douglas Dee's life was his family 
14and Papa's Helping Vets; he and his wife founded the 
15organization in 2007, which provided assistance to thousands of 
16veterans in the Quad-Cities area; what started as a small 
17gesture to help a veteran who needed a couch became a large 
18nonprofit organization providing household goods and furniture 
19to veterans, primarily homeless veterans; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, Douglas Dee received the Jefferson Award in 2014 
21for his contributions to the needs of veterans; and

1    WHEREAS, Douglas Dee dedicated his life to serving others 
2with loving devotion and a tenacious spirit of loyalty to his 
3comrades; therefore, be it
  
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL 
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of 
6Douglas E. "Papa" Dee, and extend our sincere condolences to 
7his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it 
8further
  
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
10presented to  the family of  Douglas Dee as an expression of our 
11deepest sympathy.
