| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Charlie "Chuck" Smith Jr. of Chicago, who |
| 4 | | passed away on October 12, 2017; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Chuck Smith was born in Hughes, Arkansas, to Jeff |
| 6 | | Smith and Eliza Thomas on January 20, 1927; he was their |
| 7 | | seventh child; he attended Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church |
| 8 | | in Hughes; he moved to Chicago and was a deacon at True Vine |
| 9 | | Missionary Church; he married Lottie Mae Thomas in 1972; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Chuck Smith served in the United States Army in |
| 11 | | the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952; he worked |
| 12 | | at Glidden Paint Company, from which he retired after 25 years; |
| 13 | | he then opened his own business, Chuck's Garage; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Chuck Smith was a 33rd Degree Master Mason and a |
| 15 | | member of the Jordan Temple Grand Lodge in Chicago; he was a |
| 16 | | compassionate and fun-loving person who was the life of the |
| 17 | | party; he was protective of his family and known for his |
| 18 | | strength and smile; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Chuck Smith was preceded in death by his parents; |
| 20 | | his sisters, Viola Singletary, Samela Cooks, Mae Lisa Stewart, |
| 21 | | and Della Thomas; his brothers, Elroy Shaw and J.T. Thomas; and |
