| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Herbert Wood of Port Byron; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Wood was born in Tipperary, Iowa on August |
| 5 | | 8, 1922; he lost his mother when he was less than a year old and |
| 6 | | was cared for by his grandparents until becoming the son of |
| 7 | | Vaniellia and Fagan Wood and moving to Bend, Oregon; he |
| 8 | | graduated from Bend High School; when World War II broke out, |
| 9 | | he enlisted in the United States Navy and became a fighter |
| 10 | | pilot, flying a Grumman Hellcat off the USS Yorktown, VF88 over |
| 11 | | Japan; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Wood worked as an international account |
| 13 | | manager for AT&T, representing the John Deere Communications |
| 14 | | Division; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Wood had a love of flying; he was a member |
| 16 | | of the Quiet Birdmen and started the Quad Cities Air Show with |
| 17 | | Dwayne Evans in the 1960s; he was an avid hunter, competitive |
| 18 | | skeet shooter, field trail participant, and pool shark; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Community service involvement was important to |
| 20 | | Herb Wood; he served with the Lions Club, the Oak Grove |
| 21 | | Community Center, the Arrowhead Ranch, and Youth at Risk; and |
