| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of United States Army Ranger Sergeant Joshua |
| 4 | | P. Rodgers of Bloomington, who was killed in action in |
| 5 | | Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan on April 27, 2017; he was 22 |
| 6 | | years old; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers was born in Bloomington to Kevin and |
| 8 | | Vonda Coulter Rodgers on August 22, 1994; he attended |
| 9 | | Northpoint Elementary School, Kingsley Junior High School, and |
| 10 | | Normal Community High School; he enlisted in the United States |
| 11 | | Army after graduation in May of 2013 and completed One Station |
| 12 | | Unit Training as an infantryman at Fort Benning; following |
| 13 | | completion of the basic airborne course, he graduated from |
| 14 | | Ranger Assessment and Selection Program One, also at Fort |
| 15 | | Benning; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers was assigned to 2nd Platoon, C |
| 17 | | Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment where he served as |
| 18 | | a machine gunner, light machine gunner, gun team leader, and |
| 19 | | ranger fire team leader; he was deployed three times to |
| 20 | | Afghanistan and earned the Ranger Tab, the Parachutist Badge, |
| 21 | | and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge Expert-Rifle; he was |
| 22 | | also awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct |
| 23 | | Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan |

| 1 | | Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, the Global War on |
| 2 | | Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer |
| 3 | | Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, and |
| 4 | | the NATO Medal; he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart |
| 5 | | and the Bronze Star Medal with Valor; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers was preceded in death by his |
| 7 | | grandfather, Mike Rodgers; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Sgt. Rodgers is survived by his parents, Kevin and |
| 9 | | Vonda Rodgers; his sisters, Emily Rodgers and Hannah (Nathan |
| 10 | | Lloilo) Rodgers; his brother, Ashton Rodgers; his niece, |
| 11 | | Victoria Rodgers; his grandparents, Russ and Diana Coulter, and |
| 12 | | Christine Rodgers; his aunts, uncles, and cousins, Duane, |
| 13 | | Trish, Makayla, and Delanie Fisher, Joe and Carrie Tyler, Cecil |
| 14 | | and Charlie Rodgers, and Dan, Marcie, and Charlotte Rodgers; |
| 15 | | therefore, be it

| 16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 18 | | United States Army Ranger Sergeant Joshua P. Rodgers, and |
| 19 | | extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all |
| 20 | | who knew and loved him; and be it further |
| 21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 22 | | presented to the family of Sgt. Rodgers as an expression of our |
