| 1 | | AN ACT concerning government.

| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Controlled Substances Act is |
| 5 | | amended by adding Section 315.5 as follows: |
| 6 | | (720 ILCS 570/315.5 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 315.5. Opioid education for prescribers. Every |
| 8 | | prescriber who is required under this Act to be registered to |
| 9 | | prescribe controlled substances shall, during the pre-renewal |
| 10 | | period, complete 3 hours of continuing education in safe opioid |
| 11 | | prescribing practices, which must include the following |
| 12 | | subjects: Illinois and federal requirements for prescribing |
| 13 | | controlled substances; appropriate prescribing; pain |
| 14 | | management; prevention, screening, and signs of abuse and |
| 15 | | addiction; and responses to abuse and addiction. |
| 16 | | Notwithstanding anything that may appear in any individual |
| 17 | | licensing Act or administrative rule, a prescriber may count |
| 18 | | these 3 hours toward the total continuing education hours |
| 19 | | required for renewal of professional licensure if the course is |
| 20 | | presented by an approved continuing education provider. The |
| 21 | | Department of Financial and Professional Regulation may adopt |
| 22 | | rules for the administration of this Section.
