| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to
commend The Authors Guild for its | ||||||
| 4 | longstanding service to and advocacy on behalf of
authors in | ||||||
| 5 | the State of Illinois and in the United States; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, The Authors Guild is the nation's oldest and | ||||||
| 7 | largest professional
organization for writers, with over 9,000 | ||||||
| 8 | current members that include novelists,
historians, | ||||||
| 9 | journalists, poets, academics, and independently published | ||||||
| 10 | authors; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Since 1912, The Authors Guild has been supporting | ||||||
| 12 | and protecting
American authors' constitutional and moral | ||||||
| 13 | rights to write and speak freely and to benefit
from their | ||||||
| 14 | work, as well as providing working writers with the knowledge, | ||||||
| 15 | support,
and resources they need to succeed; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, The Authors Guild advocates on issues of | ||||||
| 17 | copyright, fair contracts,
free speech, and fair tax treatment, | ||||||
| 18 | provides legal advice to its members on all issues
pertinent to | ||||||
| 19 | the writing profession, lobbies for authors on Capitol Hill, | ||||||
| 20 | negotiates with
publishers and other industry players for fair | ||||||
| 21 | contract terms and treatment, and litigates
when authors' | ||||||
| 22 | rights come under threat; and | ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Authors are facing unprecedented challenges in | ||||||
| 2 | the form of declining
incomes from writing as a consequence of | ||||||
| 3 | changes wrought on the publishing industry by
the technologies | ||||||
| 4 | and pressures exerted by corporate interests; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, The Authors Guild provides important educational | ||||||
| 6 | and informal
resources and tools to assist authors in | ||||||
| 7 | understanding and surviving the changing
publishing landscape | ||||||
| 8 | and provides community to assist in the exchange of knowledge | ||||||
| 9 | for those who often are isolated in their
working life; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, The Authors Guild is motivated by the belief that | ||||||
| 11 | a diverse literary
landscape that encompasses the entire range | ||||||
| 12 | of expression of ideas, stories, and
experiences of all | ||||||
| 13 | American people is essential to our democracy; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, The work of authors is vital to a democratic | ||||||
| 15 | society; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 17 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 18 | commend The Authors Guild for its service to the community of | ||||||
| 19 | authors in the State of Illinois and in the United States; and | ||||||
| 20 | be it further

| 2 | presented to The Authors Guild as a symbol of our respect and | ||||||
