| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the
passing of | ||||||
| 4 | Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Dr. Carlo | ||||||
| 5 | Montemagno, who passed
away on October 11, 2018; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno received his bachelor's degree in | ||||||
| 7 | agricultural and biological
engineering from Cornell | ||||||
| 8 | University, his master's degree in petroleum and natural gas | ||||||
| 9 | engineering
from Pennsylvania State University, and his | ||||||
| 10 | doctoral degree in civil engineering and geological
sciences | ||||||
| 11 | from the University of Notre Dame; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as a United States Naval | ||||||
| 13 | Officer for the United
States Department of Energy for nine | ||||||
| 14 | years; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was named a fellow for the American | ||||||
| 16 | Institute for Medical
and Biomedical Engineering, the American | ||||||
| 17 | Academy for Nanomedicine, and the NASA Institute
for Advanced | ||||||
| 18 | Concepts; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was widely published, served on the | ||||||
| 20 | editorial boards of
multiple academic journals, and was a | ||||||
| 21 | sought-after speaker on nanotechnology; and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno received numerous awards for his | ||||||
| 2 | scientific work, including
the Feynman Prize for Experimental | ||||||
| 3 | Work in Nanotechnology, the Earth Award Grand Prize,
and the | ||||||
| 4 | CNBC Business Top Ten Green Innovator award; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was named a Bill & Melinda Gates | ||||||
| 6 | Grand Challenge
winner for his development of an oral vaccine | ||||||
| 7 | delivery system that increased vaccine stability; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as director of the | ||||||
| 9 | biomedical engineering graduate
program and associate | ||||||
| 10 | professor at Cornell University and group leader in the | ||||||
| 11 | environmental
research division at Argonne National | ||||||
| 12 | Laboratories at the University of Chicago; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as a professor of mechanical | ||||||
| 14 | and aerospace
engineering, founding chair of the Department of | ||||||
| 15 | Bioengineering, and co-director of the NASA
Center for Cell | ||||||
| 16 | Mimetic Space Exploration at the University of California, Los | ||||||
| 17 | Angeles; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was the founding dean of the | ||||||
| 19 | College of Engineering and
Applied Sciences and a professor of | ||||||
| 20 | bioengineering at the University of Cincinnati; and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was an internationally recognized | ||||||
| 2 | expert in nanotechnology
and biomedical engineering and | ||||||
| 3 | focused his work on linking multiple disciplines to solve
| ||||||
| 4 | problems in areas of health, energy, and the environment; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno founded the interdisciplinary | ||||||
| 6 | Ingenuity Lab based at the
University of Alberta in Canada; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as director of the | ||||||
| 8 | biomaterials program for the
Canadian Research Council's | ||||||
| 9 | National Institute for Nanotechnology and research chair in
| ||||||
| 10 | intelligent nanosystems for the Canadian National Research | ||||||
| 11 | Council; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno became Chancellor of SIU | ||||||
| 13 | Carbondale on August 15, 2017; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno is survived by his wife, Pamela; | ||||||
| 15 | two children; and five
grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 17 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 18 | mourn, along with his family
and friends, the passing of Dr. | ||||||
| 19 | Carlo Montemagno; and be it further | ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Dr. Montemagno and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | his dedication to the
advancement of medicine and the students | ||||||
| 2 | of SIU Carbondale; and be it further
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 4 | presented to the family of Dr. Montemagno as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 5 | sincere sympathy and in honor of his achievements.
