HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Dr. Carlo Montemagno, who passed away on October 11, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno received his bachelor's degree in agricultural and biological engineering from Cornell University, his master's degree in petroleum and natural gas engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and his doctoral degree in civil engineering and geological sciences from the University of Notre Dame; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as a United States Naval Officer for the United States Department of Energy for nine years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was named a fellow for the American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering, the American Academy for Nanomedicine, and the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was widely published, served on the editorial boards of multiple academic journals, and was a sought-after speaker on nanotechnology; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno received numerous awards for his scientific work, including the Feynman Prize for Experimental Work in Nanotechnology, the Earth Award Grand Prize, and the CNBC Business Top Ten Green Innovator award; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was named a Bill & Melinda Gates Grand Challenge winner for his development of an oral vaccine delivery system that increased vaccine stability; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as director of the biomedical engineering graduate program and associate professor at Cornell University and group leader in the environmental research division at Argonne National Laboratories at the University of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, founding chair of the Department of Bioengineering, and co-director of the NASA Center for Cell Mimetic Space Exploration at the University of California, Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was the founding dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a professor of bioengineering at the University of Cincinnati; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was an internationally recognized expert in nanotechnology and biomedical engineering and focused his work on linking multiple disciplines to solve problems in areas of health, energy, and the environment; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno founded the interdisciplinary Ingenuity Lab based at the University of Alberta in Canada; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as director of the biomaterials program for the Canadian Research Council's National Institute for Nanotechnology and research chair in intelligent nanosystems for the Canadian National Research Council; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno became Chancellor of SIU Carbondale on August 15, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno is survived by his wife, Pamela; two children; and five grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Carlo Montemagno; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Dr. Montemagno and his dedication to the advancement of medicine and the students of SIU Carbondale; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Montemagno as a symbol of our sincere sympathy and in honor of his achievements.
