HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate St. Luke Missionary 
4Baptist Church in Chicago on the occasion of its 100th 
5anniversary; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, St. Luke was founded in 1918 by six deacons, three 
7ministers, and a few members; they were initially located on 
8South State Street
in a place described as "church row" because 
9of the  many small store front churches located there;   their 
10membership grew,
and a new edifice was purchased on South 
11Indiana Avenue;  at one time, church membership reached over 800 
12people who faithfully attended each Sunday; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, St. Luke has a history of celebrity attendance; 
14over the years, members have included Mahalia Jackson and jazz 
15and blues singer,
Dinah Washington, whose wedding and funeral 
16were held there; Sam Cooke and R&B group The Emotions visited 
17when they were children; Mayors Richard J. and Richard M. 
18Daley, Roland Burris,
Harold Washington, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, 
19and President Bill Clinton have all worshiped there; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, Through the years, St. Luke has partnered with 
21local leaders to help bring resources to the local community; 
22food pantries, clothing giveaways, computer training classes,

1back to school activities and services,
and community forums 
2have been organized; it has also held town hall meetings so 
3candidates can meet
and greet voters from the congregation and 
4surrounding community; and
 
5    WHEREAS, St. Luke is currently led by Pastor Rev. Scott 
6Onque; its theme for the year has been "From Generation to 
7Generation", which will culminate with a gala on September 28, 
82018
at the South Shore Cultural Center and an anniversary

9celebration on  October 28, 2018; therefore, be it
  
 

  
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
11HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
12congratulate St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago on 
13its 100th anniversary and we wish them many more successful 
14years; and be it further
  
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
16presented to St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church as a symbol of 
17our respect and esteem.
