| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Edward | ||||||
| 4 | "Ed" Sadlowski, who passed away on June 10, 2018; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski was a union activist and represented | ||||||
| 6 | thousands of steelworkers in Chicago and Gary, Indiana; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski was born into a steelworker family on | ||||||
| 8 | September 10, 1938 and grew up in the southeast side's South | ||||||
| 9 | Chicago neighborhood, watching his father organize at the | ||||||
| 10 | Inland Steel Company; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski earned the nickname "Oilcan Eddie" | ||||||
| 12 | while following in his father's footsteps as a union organizer | ||||||
| 13 | and working as a machinist at United States Steel South Works | ||||||
| 14 | in 1956; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski worked his way up to the top position | ||||||
| 16 | with the site's union in 1964, overseeing approximately 23,000 | ||||||
| 17 | workers; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, In 1975, with the platform "Steelworkers Fight | ||||||
| 19 | Back", Ed Sadlowski became president of United Steelworkers | ||||||
| 20 | District 31, its largest region, encompassing 128,000 members | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | in Chicago and Gary; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski became a district union chief with | ||||||
| 3 | United Steelworkers in 1977, gaining national attention as an | ||||||
| 4 | insurgent during a bid for the union presidency; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Ed Sadlowski championed | ||||||
| 6 | workers' right to strike and to ratify their own contracts; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski served on the local panel of the | ||||||
| 8 | Illinois Labor Relations Board from 1993 to 2012; he was | ||||||
| 9 | inducted into the Illinois Labor History Society's Union Hall | ||||||
| 10 | of Honor in 2012; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski was the voice of the working class | ||||||
| 12 | and gave power to the men and women who work in the trenches in | ||||||
| 13 | rank-and-file positions; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski worked his whole life for the ideals | ||||||
| 15 | of trade unionism, creating a profound and lasting influence | ||||||
| 16 | throughout all of organized labor; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Ed Sadlowski is survived by his wife, Marlene; his | ||||||
| 18 | children, Chicago Alderman Susan Sadlowski Garza, Patricia | ||||||
| 19 | Hoyt, Edward Sadlowski Jr., and Diane Agelson; 11 | ||||||
| 20 | grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 2 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 3 | mourn the passing of Edward "Ed" Sadlowski, and extend our | ||||||
| 4 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
| 5 | and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 7 | presented to the family of Ed Sadlowski as an expression of our | ||||||
| 8 | deepest sympathy and sincerest appreciation for his life's work | ||||||
| 9 | and achievements.
