| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the accomplishments of Jorge |
| 4 | | Ramirez, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor and a |
| 5 | | vice president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress |
| 6 | | of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez has served as an officer with the |
| 8 | | Chicago Federation of Labor since July of 2006 and was elected |
| 9 | | the CFL's first Latino president in July of 2010; in February |
| 10 | | of 2015, he was elected to the AFL-CIO Executive Council as a |
| 11 | | vice president; he is also the Chairman of the Board of |
| 12 | | Managers for ST Acquisitions Holdings, which purchased the |
| 13 | | Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader, straightdope.com, and |
| 14 | | Answers Media in July of 2017, making him the first Latino |
| 15 | | chairman of a major media corporation; he is also a board |
| 16 | | member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez earned his first union card in 1988 |
| 18 | | through the United Food and Commercial Workers International |
| 19 | | Union Local 100A, now Local 1546; he worked his way up, |
| 20 | | ultimately serving as UFCW Local 1546's executive director |
| 21 | | before joining the CFL; and |
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez serves on executive and advisory |

| 1 | | boards for labor, civic, and community organizations across the |
| 2 | | city and around the country, which allows him to represent the |
| 3 | | interests of labor and protect the fundamental rights of all |
| 4 | | workers; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez works with the Metropolitan Pier and |
| 6 | | Exposition Authority, the Chicago Sports Commission, Choose |
| 7 | | Chicago, and Chicago Infrastructure Trust and Navy Pier, Inc. |
| 8 | | to bring jobs and expand the region's economy by growing and |
| 9 | | improving the city's manufacturing, infrastructure, tourism, |
| 10 | | and trade show opportunities; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez also serves on the boards of the |
| 12 | | Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, the United Way of Metropolitan |
| 13 | | Chicago, the Archdiocese of Chicago Office for Immigrant |
| 14 | | Affairs, the St. Joseph College Seminary, and other civic and |
| 15 | | community groups; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Jorge Ramirez graduated from the University of |
| 17 | | Texas at El Paso with a double major in marketing and computer |
| 18 | | information systems; he later went on to receive his Juris |
| 19 | | Doctor from the Chicago-Kent College of Law; he and his wife, |
| 20 | | Catrina, have four sons; therefore, be it
