| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Lincoln Park Zoo on the | ||||||
| 4 | occasion of its 150th anniversary in 2018; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Lincoln Park Zoo had its beginnings in 1868 with | ||||||
| 6 | the gift of two pairs of swans from Central Park in New York | ||||||
| 7 | City; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Beginning in 1888, Cyrus DeVry oversaw the | ||||||
| 9 | building of several new structures and the arrival of many new | ||||||
| 10 | animal species, including monkeys and elephants; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Many new exhibits were built over the early part | ||||||
| 12 | of the 20th century, including the bird house and the primate | ||||||
| 13 | house; in 1931, the famous western lowland gorilla "Bushman" | ||||||
| 14 | arrived; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Over the 1960s and 1970s, Lincoln Park Zoo | ||||||
| 16 | strengthened its commitment to educating schoolchildren | ||||||
| 17 | through a variety of programming, including the popular | ||||||
| 18 | Zoo-to-You which brought zoo animals directly into Chicago | ||||||
| 19 | Public School classrooms; and | ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, In 1989, Lincoln Park Zoo began its conservation | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | and science department, which has become one of the nation's | ||||||
| 2 | largest and most effective wildlife conservation and science | ||||||
| 3 | programs; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, In 2008, Lincoln Park Zoo developed and | ||||||
| 5 | implemented the Urban Wildlife Institute, the nation's most | ||||||
| 6 | comprehensive urban wildlife conservation and science program, | ||||||
| 7 | which has now been adopted by numerous other cities throughout | ||||||
| 8 | the U.S.; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, In 2018, Lincoln Park Zoo announced one the most | ||||||
| 10 | ambitious capital projects in its 150-year history: a complete | ||||||
| 11 | overhaul of the Kovler Lion House; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Lincoln Park Zoo remains the nation's only | ||||||
| 13 | privately-managed, free-admission zoo in the country; | ||||||
| 14 | therefore, be it

| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 16 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 17 | congratulate Lincoln Park Zoo on its 150th anniversary in 2018, | ||||||
| 18 | and we wish it many more successful years; and be it further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to Lincoln Park Zoo as a symbol of our respect and | ||||||
| 21 | esteem.
