HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 110th anniversary of the founding of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha is America's first Greek-letter organization for African-American college women; it has an international active membership of more than 75,000 and is one of the world's leading service organizations whose members have made a commitment "to serve all mankind"; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 5,000 members, who reside in the Central Region, which encompasses Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and the cities of St Louis and Cape Girardeau, will hold their 84th regional conference in St. Louis on April 5-8, 2018; and

WHEREAS, This conference will include a celebration of the 110th anniversary of Alpha Kappa Alpha's founding by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, a native of St. Louis and a 1904 graduate of Sumner High School; and

WHEREAS, This conference will also include community events which will speak to the commitment of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members' focus on Educational Enrichment, Health Promotion, Family Strengthening, Environmental Ownership, and Global Impact; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the 110th anniversary of the founding of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and we wish them many more wonderful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Central Regional Director Kathy A. Walker-Steele as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
