HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to
congratulate Professor Jose E. Lopez 
4for his tireless pursuit of social justice
spanning five 
5decades; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Professor Lopez, Executive Director of the Puerto 
7Rican Cultural
Center Juan Antonio Corretjer, has been a 
8critical voice for the empowerment of
Puerto Rican and Latino 
9communities throughout Illinois and Puerto Rico; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Professor Lopez has created and led innovative 
11community initiatives
that uplift the dignity and the material 
12lives of Puerto Rican/Latinos in Chicago; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Professor Lopez was the intellectual author and 
14the relentless
force that developed the Paseo Boricua, which 
15was transformed into a successful
economic corridor and the 
16most widely recognized Puerto Rican neighborhood in
the 
17Midwest; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Professor Lopez created and continues to sustain 
19programs that
promote healthy living, access to fresh produce, 
20mental health awareness,
affordable housing, employment, and 
21entrepreneurialism in one of the most
economically

1disadvantaged communities of Illinois; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, Professor Lopez continues to mentor countless 
3young Latinos whom he
inspires to become our next generation of 
4leaders; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Professor Lopez, in his classes and through his 
6community leadership,
has been singularly indispensable in the 
7preservation of the cultural heritage of the
Puerto Rican 
8people, which in turn enriches the magnificent tapestry that is 
9the
proud multicultural landscape of Illinois; therefore, be it
  
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
11HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
12commend Professor
Jose E. Lopez for his selfless dedication to 
13the noble pursuit of social justice and to the
championing of 
14the culture and heritage of the dynamic Puerto Rican people of 
15Illinois; and be it further
  
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17presented to Professor Lopez as a symbol of our respect and 
18esteem.
