| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 100th memorial |
| 4 | | commemoration of the Showmen's League of America's Showmen's |
| 5 | | Rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Showmen's League of America (SLA) was founded |
| 7 | | in 1913 by a group of outdoor showmen meeting at the Saratoga |
| 8 | | Hotel in Chicago; Buffalo Bill Cody, the Wild West performer, |
| 9 | | was elected the club's first president; the SLA is the oldest |
| 10 | | organization of its type in North America; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The SLA is a community of showpeople, both men and |
| 12 | | women, who are dedicated to service and fellowship; by |
| 13 | | providing scholarships, financial aid, and memorial services, |
| 14 | | they promote the mutual welfare of their members and all |
| 15 | | showpeople, in good times and bad; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The Showmen's Rest symbolizes the devotion the |
| 17 | | SLA's has to its members and to showpeople; set in Woodlawn |
| 18 | | Cemetery, surrounded by five elephants, trunks lowered in |
| 19 | | mourning, it remains the final resting place for many its |
| 20 | | members; therefore, be it
