HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize Takeda's 50th anniversary of doing business in the United States and its many contributions to the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Takeda is a pharmaceutical company focusing its research and development efforts on oncology, gastroenterology, the central nervous system therapeutic areas, and vaccines; it was founded in Osaka, Japan in 1781 and entered the United States in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Takeda's Deerfield corporate campus was built in 2006 and serves as the its commercial headquarters for its U.S. Business Unit; the Deerfield campus consists of three office buildings and a separate child care facility, comprising more than 628,000 square feet; about 70% of its over 1,000 Deerfield-based employees live close enough to the campus that their commute is less than 30 minutes; Takeda has announced its plan to make a multi-million dollar investment in renovations and remodeling for its Deerfield facilities, expected to begin in 2017 and to be completed in 18 months; and

WHEREAS, Takeda offers its employees an encouraging, supportive environment that inspires scientific rigor and rewards creativity; employees can take advantage of such benefits as flexible and modified workweeks, award-winning onsite childcare, walking and running trails, fitness facilities, and adoption assistance; and

WHEREAS, The upward business growth of Takeda's U.S. Business Unit and its established presence as one of the top biopharmaceutical employers in Illinois has contributed to Takeda earning several national workplace awards; the Chicago Tribune listed its Deerfield campus among Chicago's Top 100 Workplaces for four consecutive years; Working Mother Magazine named Takeda one of its 100 Best Companies for five years in a row based on the its leadership in creating progressive programs for its workforce in the area of advancement of women, flexibility, childcare, and paid parental leave; in 2017, the Illinois Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) awarded Takeda the Pro Patria Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to an employer who demonstrates exceptional support for national defense by adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserve; and

WHEREAS, Takeda espouses the corporate philosophy of "Takeda-ism" (Integrity, Fairness, Honesty, and Perseverance), and is committed to being a good corporate citizen; it undertakes a wide range of philanthropic programs that benefit Illinois communities; since 2011, it has donated over $500,000 to nonprofits in Deerfield and the surrounding areas as part of its annual corporate giving fundraiser, Takeda Cares Day; Takeda also contributes more than $1 million in additional funds to local and regional nonprofits annually and encourages employee giving through the Matching Gifts Program, which matches each employee's charitable donations up to $5,000 per year; Takeda provides employees with paid time off to volunteer in the community, and Deerfield employees have collectively donated hundreds of volunteer hours to local charities; and

WHEREAS, Takeda provides funding and scholarships to local health and science education initiatives that engage students, their families, and teachers; in 2012, it committed to funding Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry to support science teacher education programs in Chicagoland's high need areas; since 2005, Takeda has provided scholarships to two Deerfield Bannockburn Riverwoods High School seniors with an interest in pursuing higher education in science; since 2011, it has provided Chicago Public Schools Student Science Fair Student Scholarships to high school students with a focus on health sciences; for over 10 years, Takeda has provided scholarships to a select group of science and medical research postgraduate students from Chicago area universities; and

WHEREAS, Takeda is deeply committed to environmental responsibility; its Deerfield campus office buildings are Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified, and have earned the prestigious Energy Star certification from the Environmental Protection Agency for recognition as energy-efficient top performing buildings; and

WHEREAS, Takeda believes all patients should have access to medications prescribed by their healthcare providers; the Takeda Help at Hand patient assistance program, founded in 2008, has provided more than one million prescriptions to more than 200,000 patients in the United States who are uninsured or underinsured and need help accessing their medications; and

WHEREAS, For the past 50 years, Takeda employees have been proud of what they do to help patients and their communities in the United States; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize Takeda's golden anniversary doing business in the United States, and we wish it many more years of success; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Takeda employees at the Deerfield corporate campus as a symbol of our respect and esteem for all they do to improve healthcare and economic growth in the great state of Illinois.
